Geometry

One six-week session (In person)

What to bring: Composition book, pencils, TI–83 or 84 graphing calculator, compass, ruler, water bottle, snacks, and sunscreen (labeled with name) 

Understanding geometry basics is essential for all math students today, and we bring the postulates of Euclidean geometry to life through constructions and transformations of graphs. We cover definitions, postulates and theorems, as well as angles, parallel lines, congruent and similar triangles, quadrilateral figures, polygons, circles and arcs, and the Pythagorean Theorem. Special topics include coordinate and spatial geometry, introductory trigonometry, and conics. In addition to a brief review of algebra, this class introduces the process of “proving” theorems. Assessments include daily quizzes, midterm exam and final exam. Homework may be assigned occasionally if extra practice is needed. 

Course Credit 

This class meets Common Core standards for geometry and is eligible for credit pending approval from the student’s school. It is important to confirm with your child's home school that credit can be earned for this class. Given the accelerated pace of this class, each day is equivalent to one week of class during the regular school year. Therefore, absences can be detrimental to a student’s progress and grades. Students who miss three or more class days will no longer be eligible to receive course credit. Please complete our Course Credit Release Form and return to the Landon Summer office prior to the start of the course in order to earn credit. 

Textbook

A textbook will be provided but must be returned to Landon Summer at the conclusion of the class. A deposit equal to the value of the book will be held in your Landon Summer account and removed when the book is received by August 16 in acceptable condition (students may not write in book). 

Meet our Staff:

Dr. Oral Grant

Dr. Grant has attained his bachelor's in mathematics, applied math and statistics, and secondary education from Stony Brook University while also holding a master's in school administration. Recently he obtained his Doctorate in Educational Psychology from Howard University. During his 13 years as an educator, Dr. Grant has taught students at all levels (5th-12th) in content matters ranging from Algebra, Geometry, Trigonometry, and Statistics and Probability.  

Fun fact: Dr. Grant is a professional photographer who loves to travel.
