Water Polo

Water Polo

Three one-week sessions 
June 10-14 
June 17-21 (No camp June 19)
August 5-9 (this week is for girls only) 
9:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. 
Rising 6th through rising 9th graders 
$550 per week ($465 for June 17-21) 

What to bring: Swimsuit, towel, goggles, athletic clothes, sneakers and sandals, water bottle, snacks, and lunch. 

Prerequisite: Campers must be able to swim 100 yards straight and tread water for 60 seconds to safely take part in camp. 

Learn to play water polo with the DMV’s newest team, the District Blossoms! We invite middle schoolers with zero water polo experience and those with beginner to intermediate experience. Being a Blossom is all about fundamentals and fun! Campers will learn how to swim water polo style, egg beat, pass, and shoot. Campers will be introduced to basic water polo rules and strategy. 

Daily Activities:

Water Polo camp is designed to introduce and reinforce the fundamental skills necessary to play the sport, including:  

  • Eggbeating

  • Water polo swimming  

  • Ball handling, passing, and shooting 

  • Driving 

  • Defensive positioning 

  • Offensive and defensive hole-set positioning 

  • Basic knowledge of game play and strategy 

Rain Day Activities: In the event of severe inclement weather, our campers will be engaged in the following indoor activities: 

  • Ball sports (such as handball and other traditional camp games) 

  • Review of water polo strategy and rules 

We will follow the weather closely to make sure that campers get back into the pool as soon as it is safe to go outdoors. 

Meet our Staff:

Dan Moorin, Director

Dan Moorin is a teacher, coach, and mentor at Landon School, where he serves as the

Head Coach of Varsity Water Polo and the Assistant Coach of Varsity Ice Hockey. He teaches 9th and 12th grade English, and he sings with the school choir. Dan learned to play water polo at Loomis Chaffee School in Connecticut; he first coached the sport as a counselor at Princeton Water Polo Camp; and he played collegiately at Connecticut College. He currently plays for the Washington DSeahorses, an inclusive, co-ed water polo team for adults in the DMV.

When he’s not teaching and coaching, Mr. Moorin enjoys reading an entire book in one day, trying new foods, and taking his puppy, Bruno, to the dog park!

Robby Zhang, Director

Robby grew up playing water polo in California under the tutelage of former and current USA National Team members. As a youth, he competed on teams that consistently finished in the highest division at the Junior Olympics. Robby played collegiate club water polo at Vanderbilt University where he took on a player-coach role and mentored newer players interested in the sport. He also assisted in starting the first high school program in Nashville, TN. Since then, Robby has become an active member of the master’s water polo community in the DMV and continues his passion of teaching the great game of water polo to anyone who is interested!

Heather Olson, Director

Heather started playing water polo in high school and went on to play NCAA D3 in college, where she was a 4-year All American. She began coaching youth water polo shortly after graduating and has coached for club teams and high school teams in Virginia, Maryland, and Michigan. Heather is an active member of the Washington DSeahorses, a master’s water polo team in Washington DC.
