The Summer Leadership Program (SLP) is perfect for campers who have “graduated” from our Day Camp programs and are interested in preparing for counselor in training (CIT), counselor and other leadership positions. The goal of the SLP is to teach campers the skills necessary to work with children, interact professionally with colleagues, and take on leadership roles both in school and at camp. Campers will:

  • Work closely with younger campers by shadowing Day Camp counselors in order to develop relationships and learn age-appropriate interactions.
  • Participate in teambuilding activities to develop self-awareness, strengthen the group bond, and enhance the Landon Summer community.
  • Undergo leadership training including public speaking, decision making/problem solving, personal and professional goal setting and job training skills. They will also take on leadership roles within camp operations to test their newfound skills.
  • Take part in camp internships to learn about the essential departments on campus and speak with other successful leaders in the community.
  • Build their counselor “toolbox” in preparation to work with children. They will discuss child development, design activities, and role-play scenarios that will teach them what it means to be an outstanding counselor.
  • Participate in a group-designed service project benefiting a local charity.

Over the course of two weeks, our campers will participate in activities that include teambuilding, health and safety seminars and internships with the Day Camps. Campers receive training similar to that offered to Landon Summer counselors, as well as hear from daily speakers, who talk about leadership skills and how they can be applied to their school year activities. Campers get one-on-one feedback from the teacher to discuss their experiences, share insights, and ask for advice. Self-evaluations and teacher evaluations will help campers understand their strengths and weaknesses and develop tools to further grow as leaders. The SLP will enhance each camper’s leadership skills to make them standouts when applying for the limited CIT positions at Landon Summer, as well as outside internships, service projects and jobs.

Meet our Staff:

Justin Roman

Justin is a licensed social worker and is currently a Spanish Teacher and Baseball coach in the middle school at Landon. Justin was previously the lower and middle school counselor at Landon and has worked in a variety of setting where his clinical skills as a social worker have helped children expand their social and emotional abilities to make them better leaders. Justin has a special interest in helping campers understand the connection between leadership and social intelligence and how they can develop their “soft” skills to lead groups in a more efficient and effective manner.

Fun fact: Justin enjoys learning about leadership through books, seminars, and through conversations with people who lead.
