Writing Workshop: High School Readiness

Writing Workshop: High School Readiness

One three-week session
June 24 - July 12 (No camp July 4 & 5)
10 a.m. - 12 p.m.
Rising 7th through rising 9th graders
 per session

What to bring: Laptop, Notebook, folder, pen or pencil, snack, water bottle, sunscreen (labeled with name)

Students will work on core high school writing skills, including narrative, informative, and persuasive writing. Students will produce a narrative piece imitating an author’s style and/or achieving a particular effect, an analytical piece examining an author’s style, and a persuasive piece developing a unique definition. Individual guidance, a computer lab setting, models, journaling, sentence practice, outlining, pre-writing, guided revision and peer editing enhance the writing process as students learn about writing styles and work on their own voice. Students’ final products include one narrative piece, one paragraph, and one essay.

Meet our Staff:

Elizabeth Keating

Elizabeth has been teaching English for 23 years at Walt Whitman High School. She has taught 12th grade and yearbook and is currently a 9th and 10th grade teacher. She is a self-professed “grammar nerd” and creative writing major who loves teaching an interactive writing workshop that hones students’ narrative, informative, and persuasive writing.

Fun fact: Elizabeth spent a year in England studying literature.
