Painting & Drawing

Calling all art enthusiasts! The painting and drawing program allows campers to have complete flexibility over their creativity. In the morning, the teacher will explain the painting and drawing topics of study for the day, and the campers will be given the choice to focus on the skills of painting or drawing for the morning period. Campers who are participating in the full day program can take full advantage of what Landon has to offer by participating in both the painting and drawing program each day.

Painting

Beginners
Students will experiment with various painting media including pastel, watercolor, acrylic and oil paint. Our curriculum introduces new painters to a variety of genres including representational still-life studies, landscapes, portraiture, Impressionistic scenes and abstract creations. The class emphasizes basic painting and rendering techniques for students who are new to painting through daily, personalized instruction that facilitates artistic growth.

Advanced 
Students will experiment with various painting media including pastel, watercolor, acrylic and oil paint. Our curriculum incorporates a variety of genres including representational still-life studies, landscapes, portraiture, Impressionistic scenes and abstract creations. Daily, personalized instruction facilitates artistic growth. Students can learn how to assemble a portfolio for college admission and beyond. On a case-by-case basis, some of our more experienced students are encouraged to create artwork for their International Baccalaureate (IB) and Advanced Placement (AP) portfolios

Drawing

Beginners
Beginning students will develop basic naturalistic rendering skills using various drawing media including pencil, charcoal, chalk pastels, oil pastels and ink. We introduce basic perspective and composition techniques as they apply to observing light and shadow properties.  These techniques are emphasized daily with personalized instruction. Most importantly, the class allows beginning students to gain experience in three-dimensional drawing techniques. Daily topics will include: 

• Claude Monet and the Impressionists 
• Landscapes 
• Georgia O'Keefe and pastel techniques 
• Macro drawing 
• Other topics based on student interest 

Advanced
Advanced students will reinforce prerequisite concepts such as rendering basic forms, 3D objects, and perspective using various drawing media including pencil, charcoal, chalk pastels, oil pastels and ink. These techniques are emphasized daily with personalized instruction. Students can learn how to assemble a portfolio for college admission and beyond. On a case-by-case basis, students are encouraged to create artwork for their International Baccalaureate (IB) and Advanced Placement (AP) portfolios. Daily topics will include: 

• Parallel perspective, oblique perspective, aerial perspective 

• Light and shadow properties 

• Futurism and Surrealism 

• Positive-negative drawing 

• Other topics based on student interest 

The end of each week culminates with a group critique highlighting all student work. During individual and group critiques, we cultivate aesthetic awareness and encourage personal artistic expression.
