This is an unforgettable opportunity to study the Spanish language and culture in Santander, Spain and in surrounding areas. Santander, “the Maine of Spain,” is the capital of Cantabria. It is located on a beautiful bay with spectacular beaches. Our classes meet in the highly regarded Colegio Calasanz de Santander and live with Spanish families in order to maximize their opportunity to speak Spanish and learn Spanish customs. The classes meet on a daily basis each weekday morning, leaving the students free each afternoon to practice their language skills and begin to internalize the Spanish culture by living it. Students participate in numerous activities including art and cooking classes, soccer, basketball, and surfing. Throughout the month of August, the International Festival of Music and Dance takes place in Santander. Most performances are presented in the Plaza de la Porticada.
Course Offerings: Three Landon courses will be offered. The singular nature of the academic focus and the total immersion in the Spanish language and culture will prove to be an educational experience of immense value. Given the nature of the people with whom the students live and the warmth of the community in which they stay, this broadening, sensitizing, and intellectually stimulating experience is an opportunity that students never forget.
* For those who have not previously studied Spanish, special small group or individual instruction is provided.
- Spanish Grammar and Conversation: Students who have completed two years of Spanish may take this course. It is intended to strengthen a student’s preparation for Spanish III or, in some cases, enable the student to proceed to a more advanced level.
- Intermediate Spanish: Those students who are currently taking Spanish III will take this course, preparing them for an advanced level course when they return.
- Advanced Spanish: Students who have completed level III or higher will take this course; it involves language and literature. The work will enable them to proceed to an Advanced Placement-level Spanish language or literature course in the fall.
Optional Courses: Included in the program, at no additional cost, are courses in art, cooking, and surfing. The courses are taught by professional teachers from Santander who speak only in Spanish.
Travel: During our stay in Santander, various excursions will take students to beautiful villages, sites and cities including Santillana Del Mar, one of the best-preserved and most enchanting medieval villages in Europe and Los Picos de Europa, breathtaking mountains that seem to rise from the sea. We will also visit the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao; the American Institute of Architects calls this museum “one of the most important buildings of the twentieth century.” Its architect, Frank Gehry, received the 1999 Gold Medal of the American Institute of Architects. It is the “United States’ most prestigious architectural honor.” In recent years, students have especially enjoyed their excursion to Forestal Park, a magical cable adventure loved by participants and host families.
A completed student information form and a deposit of $1,500 are required by January 10, 2020. Checks should be paid to the order of Landon School with the added notation that it is meant for Landon in Santander. Please send to Jeremy Norman at the following address:
